From forest landscapes to hidden resources: DeepBEAT meets in Koli

October 2, 2026

How can we find the raw materials needed for the energy transition while caring for the landscapes above them? This question gave a clear sense of purpose to DeepBEAT’s M24 Consortium Meeting, held in Koli, Finland, on 22–24 September 2026.

Hosted by the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK), the meeting brought partners together in person and online as DeepBEAT entered its final year. Surrounded by forests and lakes, the team explored how geochemistry, plant and soil sampling, and AI-supported analysis can help make mineral exploration more targeted and less intrusive.

Over three days, the programme connected research progress with practical learning: from work package updates and training on resource classification and isotopes to a geochemical exploration workflow demonstration. The field programme extended these discussions to Saramäki and Outokumpu, including the Hautalampi project.

A key focus was turning research into guidance others can use. Partners discussed the DeepBEAT Exploration Cookbook, upcoming courses and webinars, publication plans and the project’s final event, all helping knowledge reach beyond the consortium.

Behind these activities is a team bringing different expertise to a shared challenge. In Koli, exchanging ideas and learning from one another helped shape the next steps towards responsible exploration.

Thank you to GTK for hosting, HIF at HZDR for coordinating, and everyone who joined us in Koli and online. The final year is about bringing the pieces together—and helping DeepBEAT’s knowledge make a lasting difference.
